Where was Emily in Paris season 4 filmed? The director's guide to the show's stylish locations
The highly-anticipated first five episodes of Emily in Paris season 4 have just dropped on Netflix, with the second half being released on September 12. We pick up with Emily and friends (and lovers, and enemies) pretty much where season 3 left off, and the new series has, so far, brought the humour, fashion and explosive drama that we have come to love and expect from creator Darren Star, who also created Sex and the City. There are also certain differences in feel and tone to the new episodes; according to Andrew Fleming, a director and executive producer on Emily in Paris, this season is ‘a little bit of a departure from the previous seasons…the show is growing up, so is Emily’. Andrew has been part of the show since its inception, and directs the first three and last three episodes of season 4.
This new feel of the series plays out in various ways. For example, it’s the first time that we see Paris in winter, and the corresponding seasonal sartorial choices of the characters; ‘Paris is a very different city in the winter, maybe more beautiful in a different way, and I was excited about the possibility of photographing it like that’, explains Andrew. Yet for all the Parisian fantasy in the show, there is a darker tone to some of the storylines of the new episodes, specifically in the troubling Me Too-esque storyline concerning fictional fashion behemoth Louis de Leon, who also happens to be Mindy’s boyfriend’s father, and someone that Sylvie had a bad experience with early in her career. Regarding Sylvie’s storyline, Andrew says ‘I feel like the real world comes into this season more than it has in the past’.
The visual scope of the show feels expanded this time around, with more real luxury brand names, as well as famous places or extravagant locations, lending themselves to be featured as Emily in Paris continues to grow in popularity. In season 4, we revisit familiar locations as well as explore some stylish new ones…
