Do invest in the best bed linens, bedding and mattress you can afford
You will never regret it. We spend such a large percentage of our lives in our beds and life is too short to sleep on an uncomfortable mattress.
Do experiment with colour
The outcome can be really impactful but still calm and enveloping - leaving a positive effect on you when you walk into a room.
Do always carry a measuring tape
Having pieces of furniture that fit a space is critical so you will never find me without one.
Do make sure that the room you are designing is functional
The function of a room should come above all else and the use always needs to be determined by the user.
Do buy art that speaks to you
If you’re living with certain works of art, and encountering them on a day-to-day basis, I think it’s important they have a positive impact. I always try to source pieces of art with my clients and they often have great memories attached to them.
Don’t use fake or imitation materials
Use the real thing or find something else that works within the budget. If you cannot afford marble, use a great ceramic tile. Always express the material in its natural form
Don’t block natural light with curtain stacks where possible
Always keep them to the sides of the windows to ensure maximum brightness.
Don’t underestimate the amount of surface space you need in a bathroom
Medicine cabinet storage and drawers are also very important to keep everything tidied away and out of sight but everything is easily accessible when needed.
Don’t rely on Pinterest or Instagram for design inspiration
I always encourage my team to use books from great designers who have gone before them instead of social media which can often be trend-led.
Don’t use downlighters unless really necessary
We tend to only specify downlighters in kitchens, laundries, dressing rooms and bathrooms. Lighting from wall lights, lamps and art lights is much more flattering in rooms and creates a much more inviting atmosphere.
Don’t be afraid to make your powder room an experience
You don't spend too much time in these rooms so why not have a jewellery box moment.
